How to Prevent Geese Attacks
The best way to prevent an attack is by reducing interaction between human and goose as much as possible. First, make certain to never feed the geese. If on public property alert local residents not to feed them. Ideally, geese will not be comfortable around people and will actively avoid them. Fence off your land to reduce the chance of interaction between the geese and the public and prevent geese from viewing your land as their territory. Goose harassment programs such as laser harassment can also help to scare them off and prevent them from viewing your property as their territory. If these techniques fail, and geese still manage to set up a nesting area on your property it is time for professional wildlife control. If the geese have already nested on your property make certain to contact a wildlife control service to professionally and safely relocate the nest to a less public location.
What to do if a Goose Attacks
If all else fails, and a goose is ready to throw down we have some steps to protect yourself:
Maintain Eye Contact - Geese have excellent eyesight and will be able to see your body language and posture to understand how you are reacting to them. They can tell from your body language that you are a threat and will be hesitant to attack.
Slowly Back Away - In the event that a goose begins to charge, slowly back away while maintaining eye contact. Remain calm and continue to move away. Even though the goose is becoming aggressive if you continue to face them while backing out of their territory actual physical attacks are very rare.
Do Not Run - If a goose sees you running it may encourage them to chase you, as they can view you as agitated or aggressive. Even if the goose is gaining ground stay calm and remain moving away at a steady, measured pace.
Imminent Attack - If a goose flies at your head, make sure to cover your face and duck to try to avoid any damage to your head or face. Do what you can to protect yourself while continuing to move to a location where you can safely contact wildlife control.
