Bird Removal: Most Common Nuisance Birds in Ohio

  • Black Vultures

  • Roosting Birds

  • Woodpeckers

In today’s Animal Remover blog post, our bird removal expert will look at these birds and explain why they can be a problem.

Black Vultures

In Ohio, there are two species of vultures: turkey vultures and black vultures. While both are scavengers, as all vultures are, black vultures are more of a threat than turkey vultures because they are much more aggressive. These vultures have been known to attack newborn calves, presenting a real threat to Ohio farming and agriculture.

Over the last several decades, the smaller black vultures have been growing in population, increasing the amount of property and livestock damage. In fact, the most common request to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services in Ohio was requesting help with black vultures. As far as bird removal goes, black vultures are at or near the top of the list for most Ohio residents.

Roosting Birds

While black vultures pose a bigger threat to rural residents, roosting birds present a bigger threat to urban residents. Consisting largely of sparrows, starlings, and pigeons, these birds typically gather in big groups and can cause both property damage and a foul stench from their droppings.

Netting is an effective preventative measure to take to keep these birds out of your porch or basement before bird removal services are needed. Another measure you can take is installing porcupine wire in places that these birds gather, such as ledges or gutters.

Lastly, woodpeckers often pose the biggest threat to Ohio for property damage among nuisance birds. While most woodpeckers will usually peck away at dead trees, animal removal is sometimes needed for woodpeckers who find their way to houses with natural wood siding or even just larger houses that produce more sound when pecked. This can cause damage to your home’s exterior and while you can scare them away, you may need a bird removal expert to make sure they leave you alone for good.
