Skunks are classified as a nuisance animal species due to their habits of scavenging for food in urban areas and living around homes. The most common complaints include the following:

Skunk Biology

(Mephitis mephitis) the striped skunk weighs 4-12 pounds on average and is about 22-30 inches in length. Striped skunks have a black body with two large white stripes that run from the head and down the sides to the tail. Skunks mate in late February and baby skunks are born during the month of May. Litter size ranges from 3-6 baby skunks. Lifespans average 2-5 years in the wild.

Skunk Behavior

Skunks are opportunistic livers and feeders. They are nocturnal, which means they are active mostly at night. During the day, they sleep in dens they dig under porches, decks, sheds, and patios. Skunks are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals, but they seem to prefer insects and mice over other foods. Skunks go into a sleep that is very similar to hibernation and their activity is very low during the winter months. They often communicate via scent marking, and males will often discharge during mating season. When threatened, skunks will pound their front feet into the ground as a warning sign that they might spray. If the skunk feels there is still a threat, it will arch its back, lift its tail, and discharge a highly putrid liquid from the glands near the anus. Skunks can spray 15 feet at 180 degrees. Not only does skunk essence smell offensively bad, but it can also cause temporary blindness.

Nuisance Concerns

Since skunks are opportunistic scavengers, they can come into conflict with people quite often. Skunks will eat garbage, pet food, etc. Skunks will also alarm your furry friends and if your four-legged family member is sprayed by one, you should call your local veterinarian immediately. Most of all, skunks often like to live under human structures, such as sheds, decks, porches, or patios. Since skunks use scent as a means of communication, male skunks will randomly discharge. This causes problems for people with open windows in spring and early summer.

Skunk Diseases

Skunks often carry rabies. They also defecate and urinate under structures, which can pose the usual excrement health risks, such as histoplasmosis or Salmonella.

How to get rid of skunks:

The only proven method for skunk removal is through trapping, habitat modification, and exclusion. Skunks will not respond to repellents, strobe lights, music, mothballs, or ammonia. We have been to numerous properties where these methods have failed. There are no repellants available on the market that will deter skunks from living on a property.
